StoryLeather Luxury Goodies: Unique Style, Selection, and Personalization!

Most of you know that I am more of an in-store shopper versus an online shopper. This is simply due to preference -- I love to experience a multi-sensory store visit! When it comes to investing in a new retail item, I like to touch the material, inhale the scent of newness, and chat with sales associates as I have questions about merchandise (or simply because I love to talk!).

So when one of the heads of StoryLeather reached out to me and asked if I’d like to sample some of their products, I welcomed it with open arms. And I did so after only briefly browsing the StoryLeather site. Because first impressions are everything, I wanted to simply experience that as authentically as possible.

Well, I was delighted when it arrived not long after. The packaging was very impressive! I love the details of the box, how it was wrapped, the soft cloth, and the sticky emblem. The contents of the box included: a black phone holster case, a purple leather phone case with credit card slots, and a red key holder. Beautifully custom-made, handcrafted items (100% genuine leather) with individual textures!

Now, what’s especially unique about StoryLeather (after really researching its site), is that you can basically build your own product. The 3 signature steps: 1) Select a Style 2) Choose Your Leather 3) Personalize It. I appreciate a company that realizes that not everyone wants a cookie-cutter accessory, especially when the product is a luxury item (price range: about $100 and up). As for the personalization, I can attest to the beautiful engraving, as the purple phone case/credit card holder had a scripted name on it.

Also, when researching StoryLeather, I was impressed by its selection of goodies for both men and women, as well as the provided product knowledge alongside each item. In addition, the StoryLeather site has a blog section that explores a variety of technology topics. I think that’s pretty cool, as it offers the shopper the ability to learn more about his/her own gadget as well as relevant industry news. This definitely shows that StoryLeather wants its customers to have a stimulating online shopping experience, while supporting its premise: Everyone has a unique story to tell about themselves. (It's also really great online marketing!)

While, I cannot attest to the actual process of placing an order on StoryLeather.com, etc., I can say that the it was a joy communicating with the company. So I will assume that the level of customer service I was provided with is, most importantly, extended to shoppers!

For luxury goods, especially when it comes to gifting for the holidays, I say YES to StoryLeather quality products as well as its unique concept. And maybe…just maybe…this Los Angeles blogger will reconsider online shopping.

Interview with 'Savi Coco' Designer Lindsay Ahart (Get 10% Off Her Surf and Custom-Made Jewelry!)

(Lindsay Ahart - Designer of Savi Coco)

Savi Coco - an accessories line that consists of surf and custom-made jewels - was recently introduced to me. Specially designed and handcrafted by Lindsay Ahart (president and owner of Pink Lamb Productions), this line of artistic jewelry will definitely add the "boho" to your "chic"...without making you overspend. (I, mean, unless you want to purchase all of her incredible pieces at once that is!)
I absolutely love learning about the inspiration and goals behind a designer's collection, so it's with great pleasure that I can share our recent interview with you, my lovely readers. Enjoy!
Tell me about the concept behind Savi Coco. How did it come about?
I started to do surf art and beach-inspired art close to 10 years ago. I thought it would be cool and fun to turn my art into jewelry. I like adding fun sparkle pieces to accent my piece of art. One day, someone asked me if I could use one of their pictures. So I took their picture and turned it into a piece of jewelry for them. So now I do beach and personal jewels!

(A personalized jewel!)

I love the name! Can you talk about its origin?
Savannah and Chloe...My daughters go by Savi and Coco :)
The So Cal vibe of your collection is awesome? Did you grow up here?

I grew up in Burbank, but went to college at San Diego State University and still have a house there...I love SD!

How did you get into jewelry design?

I wanted to take my artwork to a different level so I started doing jewelry about a year ago.

(This piece is called "Surf Feeling." Look closely to see why!)

What type of woman do you design for?

Any age or type of woman or girl that enjoys a whimsical and beachy vibe. Anyone that would like their own image turned into a charm!

If you were stranded on a tropical island, and could wear only one piece from your jewelry collection...which one would it be?

My favorite is "Tropical Bliss." This was inspired when I was in Hawaii and takes me to that moment every time I wear it. It makes me happy!

(Lindsay's favorite piece from her Savi Coco collection of artwork: "Tropical Bliss." )

Any other details that you would like to share with the public - those interested in (and obsessed with!) fashion and beauty?
It is not just about beach jewelry but also the personal keepsake that I hand-make for people! Please visit my website, PinkLamb, for all details of my jewelry and creative endeavors. Besides my jewelry and surf/beach art. I am a published author and successful video producer!

My Interview with Jewelry Designer Lydia McLaughlin -- Entrepreneur and Ex-OC Housewife!

(The sparkling Lydia McLaughlin!)

Yes, Lydia McLaughlin from "The Real Housewives of Orange County" is as down-to-earth as she appears on television! In my exclusive interview with the now Ex-OC Housewife (by choice), the mother of two as well as co-founder and managing editor of one of California's most high-end luxury publications - Beverly Hills Lifestyle -- we get the goods. Granddaughter of the founder of NTV, the largest privately held multi-media company in Canada, Lydia talks about her love for fashion, her new, limited-edited handcrafted jewelry line LYDIA M Jewelry, the importance of feeling unique and beautiful, and how she held her own as a regular on one of the hottest shows to hit Bravo TV

Having kept up with “The Real Housewives of Orange County” since its beginning, I have to say it’s so nice to be able to have the chance to speak with you because you appear so kind and down-to-earth. Also, it’s interesting to learn about the entrepreneurship that runs in your family…

It’s always fun to talk to someone too that knows a little bit about you, so that’s good!

OK, I’m excited to pick your brain about being a jewelry designer.  When did you start designing?

Well, I’ve always really been into fashion. When I was in high school, I would always wear necklaces in my hair and do things that I thought were super cool. I’ve always been interested in it, and then when my husband and I started our magazine, Beverly Hills Lifestyle, five years ago, I got to be on all these photo shoots and I was meeting other designers and other fashion people – I got to go in to all these showrooms. And I realized, 'Wow, they’re just people who are living out their dreams. So I could do it too.' So in a lot of ways, that gave me the confidence and the connection to meet with people so I could ask how they make a necklace and where do I get the products to put together a jewelry line. Like ‘I love these kinds of earrings, so how could I implement that?’ So I started doing the research for it, basically five years ago, and then I partnered up with a jeweler two years ago.

"Pandora Bangles" by LYDIA M Jewelry

So since you started, how do you feel now? Do you feel like “OK, I got this. This is my new calling”…?

As far as “I got this”...For me, when I feel like that, then I’m ready to move on with something. I’m into the challenge of learning, and I always like changing and evolving, so I do not feel like I’ve got this. I feel like it’s really exciting and I love it, and I love learning more. The first line we did was all with gold. I love sparkle and gold, and I love working with that material. So I think I’m still learning, and there’s so much to learn. This is just the beginning. As far as feeling like this is my calling, it’s  definitely something that I love. We have a bunch of other businesses and bunch of other ventures, but I’m definitely putting a lot of love and energy into it...I don’t think I’m finished yet – I’m only 32.

It’s great to know that you’re really getting in there, and it’s still new!

Yeah, I’m still growing as a jewelry designer and I’m still learning the ropes. Right now, you can get it on my website, www.lydiamjewelry.com. I’m really passionate about making the jewelry, making what I would like to wear, and perfecting the products. We are also at one store ("Treasures") at the Montage in Laguna Beach. We really haven’t pursued yet getting it in a bunch of stores. One day I would love to have my line in Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus, and stores like that. But all of that takes so much time, so we haven’t expanded yet or really pursued that. We’re mainly offering it on my website, and that’s working and being really successful right now. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll have another line and…I’ll take over the world!

I wouldn’t doubt that!

Right now, I’m comfortable where I am.

Besides designing for yourself and what you would like to wear, what type of woman do you envision wearing your jewelry?

You know, honestly, they are really versatile pieces.  And so, you can wear it to a play date with your kids at the park, and then you can wear it to dinner, and then you can wear it to a board meeting. I like to put it on in the morning, and kinda go through the day. It fits my lifestyle. I think it’s good for all sorts of women. At the mall, I’ve had younger girls come up to me wearing it. They probably were in high school, and they were wearing my hoop earrings. It was like their big Sweet Sixteen birthday present or something, and that was really cool to see that. And also, I wear my jewelry – my bangles – on the red carpet all the time. So it really is for anyone that likes sparkle and gold.

"Calypso Ring" by LYDIA M Jewelry

I love that your jewelry has a vintage feel!

It actually is modeled after that. I found a bunch of vintage brooches and old pins, and since those are one of a kind, I really wanted to find things that looked like those original vintage clips that I found.

How involved are you with the creation of each piece?

It’s all handmade in Orange County, so yes, every piece I have touched for sure. I’m not in my bedroom working on it, from 9 to 9. We have people that are doing that, but I’m really involved. Like I said, I see every piece and I touch every piece, and I make sure that I would wear it and it’s exactly up to par to what I had envisioned.

As for starting the line and being involved in the process of creating it, have there been some challenges that you had to overcome?

Well, maybe a challenge was just with being on the Real Housewives [of Orange County], you don’t get to control what they show. So I was kind of bummed that they didn’t show a really cool photo shoot at the beach and that I had met with my jewelry designer…And they didn’t put that in as part of my story.

That is a total bummer! That would have been amazing to watch…

But I think the show likes to show the drama or a challenge a lot of times, and it was just like, “Wow, here she is designing, and here she is at the beautiful beach with models.” I think if I had maybe got in a fight with someone, it would have made the cut! [laughs] I think in one of the scenes Vicki says “Oh, what do you do? You’re a jewelry designer?” After that, you could see orders coming in across the country. That’s how powerful the show is...or, maybe that’s just how awesome my jewelry is! [laughs] Imagining if people were to see those scenes, it would have made it more interesting. So that was a challenge. You never know what they’re gonna do.

("Hero Bracelet" by LYDIA M Jewelry)

Well, I’m sure the exposure still feels really good from being on the show…

Oh my gosh! I’m so grateful for the opportunity, honestly. It’s a wonderful platform, and it’s so humbling. If I hadn’t done the show, I never would have 16 year old girls coming up to me at the mall when I’m with my kids, like “Hey, I’m wearing your earrings! Can I get a picture?” And that a thousand percent has to do with the Housewives, and only because I was a housewife. So I definitely don’t take that for granted.

I'd say it's apparent that many “reality stars” have made that life their path. But you have really created your own empire – your own life. So it’s really exciting to hear about this jewelry line!

Thank you, I appreciate that. I think the producers were interested in me because I do have my own stuff. Like we have our own magazine and I have the jewelry line, and we have a lot going on in our lives. And I think sometimes people become reality stars, and then they get to do those things because of the show. It was good for me, because I could just be myself and I didn’t need to play into it in any way. And I could walk away at any minute – and I did walk away. So it was freeing for me, because I didn’t need the show. And I think if you really need it, you’re more willing to compromise some things…

I really respect that. Thank you for sharing. As for the cost of your jewelry collection, what is the current price range?

Everything is basically under $400, and it’s starting at $50. It’s a pretty wide range; we sell rings that are around $150 and earrings around $100, and necklaces are about $300 – it just depends. We’re releasing two necklaces for Christmas, which are more affordable for a present…which is really cool. Also, there was a headband with a little bling that I wore a lot on the show, so I made my own which is really cool that I’ve been wearing. I’m gonna roll that out also on the website.

So exciting! You know I started Good Girl Gone Shopping in 2007, where it was just about finding everything on sale and that you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on things. Now, it’s turned into a bit more of interviewing designers and getting into the inspiration and providing tips. So now, it’s not just about finding things that are cheap, it’s about quality as well…

That’s cool. Yeah, my jewelry is handmade and they’re gold, and it’s gold filled, not gold-plated.  I have super-sensitive skin, so I wanted to make the nicest, best stuff. And so they really are pieces that will last. They are really lightweight, and so you forget you’re wearing them. Like my bangles, I sleep in them sometime when I forget to take them off. They have that pop of bling, and it’s really comfortable jewelry. I hate wearing those earrings that at the end of the day, you just can’t wait to take them off. And mine, you just forget that you’re wearing them until someone compliments you.

(Supermom Lydia with the fam!)

So it sounds like your line is a balance of comfort, chic wear, and quality…

Yeah, that’s how I am. I love fashion...I love being cute and expressing myself and how I’m feeling….and being kind of quirky through my clothes. But I really like comfort, and I always tend to wear the pair of jeans that are the most comfortable. So, you know, I think jewelry is the same way.

I agree! And I do see some statement styles from your collection too.

Definitely. I have some dainty pieces, but a lot of them are the rock star piece. It’s like yeah, you put that ring on, and your statement piece for sure, which is fun.

My last question: What type of emotional benefits would you want a woman to gain from wearing your jewelry?

I just want her to feel beautiful and to know that she’s unique.  I think today, in American culture, in society…There’s a very certain sense of beauty…that you should look a certain way. But I think that we’re all unique and special, and that nothing about us is a mistake. I think that if you put on a little extra bling and it makes you feel beautiful, then my work here is done.

I love that. What a great quote!

Also, 10 percent of everything goes to isanctuary, which is a non-profit jewelry line. They hire women that have ben rescued from human trafficking to make all their jewelry. So we give back to them and contribute to their whole slogan, which is “Purchase with a Purpose.” Their stuff is really affordable; a lot of it is like under 20 bucks, and on the back [of the pieces] it’s been signed by the woman who made the jewelry. She’s been a victim of human trafficking and has been rescued.

INTERVIEW: I Chat with Kristen Dorsey About Her Unique Chickasaw-Inspired Jewelry Collection!

(Kristen's jewelry was displayed beautifully.)

(Guests included Peter Drivas, Founder and President of www.laartsalliance.org and Marc Littlejohn, fashion photographer, stylist, and fashion designer, www.marclittlejohn.net)

(Cocktails and conversations amongst Kristen's inspiring collection!)

I was introduced to Kristen Dorsey Designs last April, when I had the opportunity to wear a pair of her beautiful earrings on the red carpet at a Project Ethos event. Her delicately crafted "Turtle Song Earrings" were so amazing that I, naturally, kept in touch with Kristen. I definitely wanted to stay up to date with the happenings and developments of her collection. So, the minute I got her personal invite to an intimate showcase in her downtown LA live/work loft, my RSVP was an immediate...YES.

During the gathering, I was able to view and touch several one-of-a-kind pieces, spend time watching Kristen explain the tools that exist in her workspace, meet some great people, take photos of her artistic collection, and chit-chat in a one-on-one interview with the jewelry designer. Hope you enjoy our conversation as I much as I did!

(A proud jewelry designer giving us the ins on her processes!)

(A glimpse into Kristen's world...)

(Tools galore!)

So, Kristen, tell me about the collection you have on display here...

My goal is to do one collection per year. And the collections kind of build on each other, so I started with “Earth, Sky, Water” collection, and there are different designs that embody each of those elements. That was my first collection. So for my second collection, it’s called the “Shokmalli” collection, which means, “Lightening.” This represents the Sky.  And some of my pieces from the first collection, I use that as inspiration and build off of it. So then each piece in this whole collection [Shokmalli] has a different aspect of different Sky beings from the Chickasaw culture.

And then the collection after this one is going to be about the Water. And then the one after that will be about the Earth...

(An eye-catching statement piece!)
Do you find yourself getting inspired, thinking ahead and wanting to design for, say, the Water or the Earth collection?

Sometimes…I have a limited window of time to design a prototype of everything, so I try to stay focused. But sometimes the best designs happen when I’m just being creative…Playing around with the materials. Like, I’ll just want to make a pair of earrings ‘cause I think they’ll be cool and fun to wear like these [Kristen then points to the unique earrings she’s wearing, which she light-heartedly refers to as “antlers.”]

What is it about the Chickasaw culture that inspires you?

It’s a Native American tribe that’s originally from the southeast of the United States…And I’m Chickasaw. When I went to school, all of my studies focused on Native American Studies…history, cultural preservation, race and identity. Then I focused on my own tribe and my own family’s history, and then looked specifically at our jewelry-making practices and how those have changed or how they’ve stayed the same over time...and the various themes that we use and the materials that we use, and how jewelry and adornment can be a form of cultural expression and cultural preservation and revitalization. Because it’s a visual language.

Is designing something you’ve always wanted to do?

Yes. I knew my whole life…I was always an artist. I was always making things. Painting, drawing…from when I was tiny. My mom said it was amazing, that I would just sit and draw.

(Another statement piece to be worn proudly!)
So this is no surprise to your family that you are a jewelry designer!

[giggle] No, not at all. And then in high school, I thought I wanted to be a fashion designer. And I actually produced a few fashion shows for charity with my high school, and got my friends to model and made all the clothes. Then I went to an art school in Boston, and I took a beginner jewelry design class. It was my first time working with metal and worked with sautering, and it was a whole new world. It was so challenging at first, and so frustrating. But nothing had ever challenged me that much before, because everything always came so natural to me. And then as I learned more, the more I realized what I could do with it and the possibilities were just endless. And I got totally hooked! It was exciting. I mean, I could wear it after it was done, and I was so proud that I made it. Learning metal-working was a huge challenge…

How long did it take you to feel like you mastered it? Like “OK, I got this.”

I don’t think you ever master it. I think you’re always learning, especially with metal work. There’s always something, some skill that I can improve on…And I’m always getting better with every piece I make.
(Some of my favorites. Ready to wear!)

I can understand that. Like as I writer, I never felt like I mastered an article. So when did you think, at least, “OK, I can do this”…?

I feel like now I’m a pro, and I do know that I’m good at what I do. I have a start-to-finish perspective on the pieces, and I know the blood, sweat, and tears that goes into them. And I’m proud of the pieces. But I’m also a perfectionist…I won’t show a piece I’m not happy with. Or, I’ll sell it really cheap to somebody. [giggles] I have a high standard of perfection.

That’s great – You keep raising the bar on yourself! What are you goals with the Lightning collection?

I’d really love to get into more boutiques, grow the company, and expand my name – the awareness of my name. It’s [Kristen Dorsey Designs] me and my production manager, and we outsource different things to certain people. This includes stone setting and casting.

Who do you design for? Is there any ideal type of client?

I actually design things that I want to wear! [giggle] But I think someone who is strong and powerful, and at the same time, embraces her femininity and her unique beauty…And just who loves jewelry. Someone who loves statement pieces, someone who doesn’t shy away from anything.

SCOJO New York: My New Ready-to-Wear Essentials (Enter to Win a Pair!)

(SCOJO New York "Walton Street" style)
I've been wearing (and loving!) my D&G specs for more than 5 years now. And while I plan to continue to sport my thick black, geek-chic frames, I am so excited to have new eyewear to flaunt.

The SCOJO New York website is definitely worth checking out. It's where I decided on the "Walton Street" style ($77). Among the wide and affordable (!) selection of  modern frame shapes and color combos, the Walton Street style immediately jumped out at me. The deep purple shade on the sides is fun and artistic, and the two-tone black and clear frames are interesting.

SCOJO New York glasses are actually a collection of reading eyewear. (Hardly strong enough for my blind eyes, I got my own prescription put in.) Was actually nice to not overspend on trendy glasses and have a pair to bring in with me to the optometrist's office. (Usually I buy designer wear there.) The Walton Street style is part of The Tribeca Collection, which is said to be "inspired by the legendary downtown district of New York City. The Tribeca collection reflects the hip style and witty character of this historic neighborhood bearing the same name. Utilizing the finest Italian acetates and metal components available today, Tribeca marries form and function with effortless grace."

In addition to its chic collections of eye wear (The Gels Collection is also worth checking out!), SCOJO New York also proudly contributes to society, which I have the utmost respect for. Since its inception in 2001, a portion of their profits have been donated to charitable organizations that provide eye care and eyewear to those in need of assistance at varying levels. From eye exams and glasses to optical care requiring more extensive medical treatment, Scojo New York is all about making personal connections while giving the gift of better eyesight. VERY cool.

If you would like a chance to win your own pair of Walton Street reading glasses, all you gotta do are two things:

1) Tweet about this article/contest mentioning me @GoodGirlShops

2) Leave a comment here with a link to your Twitter page.

Contest runs til the end of the month: Sunday, June 30th by 8 p.m., pacific time. There is no limit to how many times you tweet, but I will be looking for the most creative tweet. That is how I will determine the winner!

Good luck!!!
