Are you OVER your Style? Top 3 Tips on How to Reveal the Real YOU!

(Wanna break free from the past? Communicate your true personality in style!)

I know what it’s like to look in the mirror and just think, “Blah. Is that all you got girl?!” It actually took several of these moments in my life before I finally started to truly connect with my personality and breathe new life into my overall image. While I have always appreciated my unique look, such as having a splatter of freckles on my face, gapped teeth, and a huge selection of hair scarves to add color to my outfit (and hide my horrible weaves), I wanted to up my image and reinvent any misconception about what a “writer” looks like. You know, I mean, I’m more than a geeky wordsmith…

I’m a writer with (from what I hear) interesting perspectives, a love for all types of music, a biracial individual with a love for bohemian vibes, and a woman with a natural sense of femininity and appeal. It was time to actually communicate these attributes with the proper mind-frame and look! (Yes, this fashion blogger can admit that she wasn’t feeling quite on point.)

While I didn’t consciously follow a step-by-step guide toward changing my look (that’s kinda lame, right?), I just slowly started to lose my fear of the unknown and realize that I have the power to transform my look into something I’m proud of.

So if you’re way OVER your current style, why not start today? It’s a new day and a new month! Because a fresh beginning can be oh-so-exciting, here are 3 tips that may help you when it comes to revamping your look:

Look Within: What are you about? What do you stand for? Do you have a purpose in life? Looking within before (or as) you work on your appearance is significant. Maybe now is the time to come to terms with your real passion, the line of work you’re in vs. the line of work you want, budget, beliefs, and goals. I’ve yet to make the big bucks that allow me to jet set, but when I do have a couple dollas that aren’t already assigned to bills, I’ll step foot in a vintage store or an affordable retail outlet like Target, and enjoy treating myself to something special. I’m not quite in the position to go on a shopping spree at Chanel, but there is no reason I should feel shame and not feel pride in what I can afford.

Meditation, working out, and reading inspirational books (or via audio) can also help connect you to your inner self. There’s something pretty awesome that happens when you realize that you actually can lose weight and/or that you can get the job you’ve always wanted. It’s called confidence. And once you’ve increased your confidence, your energy becomes stronger and you will find yourself excitedly considering new ways to add vibrancy to your look -- the ways that communicate your authentic personality.

(Push past your fear! Gradual changes to your appearance can feel really good!)

Create a New Hair Story: When was the last time you tried a new ‘do? There are so many different types of trends to try out these days. From experimenting with a bold color to ditching your long curls and going pixie, the style you choose is a direct reflection of your personality and lifestyle. Just over a year ago, I decided to embrace my natural hair and ethnicity, saying goodbye to weaves, extensions, and relaxers. While I never grew up with the intention of locking my hair, doing so has been a life-altering decision – one that has not only added a special twist to my style; this personal decision has increased my level of spirituality. Dreadlocks are definitely not for the meek, as it takes patience, commitment, and the guts to ditch “the norm.” But this is my unique hair story…Are you at the point in your life where you're ready to write your own story?

Try New Fashion Trends: Before you can embrace the new, you need to understand the old…and possibly even say goodbye to some of it. So start by evaluating your wardrobe! Take a few hours and try on old pieces, creating a “keep” as well as a “donate” (or “sell”) pile. And in doing so, consider what fits, what is actually flattering, how often you wear an item, and whether or not you think you’ll ever wear it again. Once your closet is organized and you are ready to try out new trends, I’d suggest building on with what you already love. If you are obsessed with your pointy-toed stilettos, then maybe it’s the perfect time to invest in a pair of red ones! Wish you had a pair of rocker holey jeans, but not willing to cut up or tear some of your favorite denim pants, head on over to a local vintage or thrift store for an already, worn-in pair of “boyfriend jeans.” Enhancing your style and exploring creative ways to adopt a new trend may happen slowly over time or it may be something you jump on right away. It’s all a matter of timing and how much you know yourself. ‘Cause you won’t be able to choose the right, new pieces to communicate your personality if you’re still dwelling on the old.

Looking Forward to a Night Out in the City? Here are 3 Reasons to Ditch Your Heels!

(YES - you can totally have fun with flats! Collage credit: www.polyvore.com)

I enjoy wearing heels when I am going to a particular event that I know will allow me to sit at least half of the time. (i.e., LA fashion show, graduation party, movie theater). But the truth is, I believe my feet are still recovering from the days I would wear heels while working 8-hour shifts at Nordstrom (and sometimes 10 to 12-hour shifts during special sales!). And even though that was 10 years ago, my feet have never been the same. So slowly, over time, I've been incorporating both casual as well as sexy flats to accompany my outfits. Not only do I value having a versatile wardrobe, but I am coming to terms with the fact that -- at 34 years old -- I need to be smart regarding what I choose to put on my feet. (Mom, if you're reading this, I know you're smiling and nodding in agreement.)

Like I said, I do love a hot heel! But for the nights out on the town -- the nights you don't want to end early and the nights that don't have to end early -- I suggest adorning your feet with a statement-making flat.

Here are my top 3 reasons for ditching your heels when getting ready for a night out in the city:

1) Comfort rules: Recently, my boyfriend and I spent the weekend at Venice Beach, in which we stayed at a quaint hotel just a few blocks from the boardwalk. Knowing this ahead of time, I decided that I was gonna rock my new boho-chic sandals I recently purchased (after winning a Sears gift card from a Twitter contest!) with my black and denim ensemble. It was the best choice I could have made, because even though we were just a few blocks away, we decided to explore and walk around town for delicious bites and drinks. Not once did he ask if my feet hurt, because over and over again, I kept saying, "I'm so glad I wore these shoes!" Bonus tip: Choose a shoe for the night that you've already worn in slightly in order to avoid blisters on your heels and toes, and everywhere in-between. This time around, I lucked out with only minimal discomfort from my first-time wear. Must be a great quality shoe from Sears! (I never would have thought, to be honest...)

2) Extra Exercise: If you're comfortable, you can walk longer! Whether you're bar hopping in LA or in Vegas, it's fun when your plans for the night are not based around how long you can actually bare to walk in your heels. Let's be honest: Complaining about your feet just annoys everybody after awhile, unless you're with gals who are experiencing the same thing, and y'all just decide to end your night early based on foot pain! (been there, done that) And while dancing in heels is much more fun, in my opinion, wearing sexy flats still look great on the dance floor! Plus, the longer you're moving, the more calories you're burning. Yup - that's important to me...and I bet to you too!

3) Stress-Free StashingNow that you have on a hot pair of flats, you don't have to worry about where you're going to stash your "comfy shoe" to change into after your heels have beaten your feet up and...you...can't...walk...any...further. Many chicks keep a pair of flats in the car or in an oversized handbag to help ease an emergency situation. Yes, the pain can actually become unbearable and tear-worthy. While having a pair of flats stashed in your handbag is a smart idea, it does kinda cause you to battle over which bag will have enough room to store a pair of flip-flops or ballet flats. And what if you do leave a pair in the car? Well, make sure you're parked extremely close to where you're hanging out, because the walk back to the car will feel incredibly long when you're limping.

'The Art of Melrose' Celebrates the Character of 'Fashion' Tonight, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.!

For my 16th birthday, I didn’t want a “Sweet Sixteen” or to hang out with a bunch of friends. Nope. All I wanted was to go with my mom to Melrose and buy “something vintage.” And that’s what we did. The next day, I returned to school in the Inland Empire (Pomona High School) as the prideful outcast that I was, wearing my new treasured item: an argyle-printed, turquoise cardigan. And the rest is history...LA eventually became my home.

Now, an LA blogger who is still a total Melrose enthusiast and shopper, I’m proud to help announce something extremely cool and accessible: The Art of Melrose. Basically, it’s a celebratory, 3-series event that will take place the third Thursday of every month throughout June, July, and August. The Art of Melrose starts tonight, June 18th, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

“The goal of the event is to showcase tremendous opportunities and value where consumers, and all of LA, will realize the magic that is Melrose,” says Don Duckworth, Executive Director of the Melrose Business Improvement District (BID), during our recent phone chat.

According to Duckworth, the BID is brand new – just a year old: “It’s a district that was formed by a vote of the property owners. The BID is a legal entity that was adopted just to promote business on the street.”

So how did the concept of The Art of Melrose come about?

“One of things that we have a desire – and an obligation – to do is to promote the full length of Melrose and all of the characters that are different from area to area.  And so we tried to figure out something that really identified the uniqueness and the fascinating array of activities and opportunities that are available on Melrose," says Duckworth. "So we came up with the idea of celebrating the art of Melrose in three unique characters; one being fashion, another being design, and another being expression. Each of those characters that stretch over a different number of blocks on Melrose, really add up to a story of what this street really is and the opportunities it has for people…whether you’re a shopper or a window shopper, or someone who is just looking to have a good meal and experience something good and fun in Los Angeles.”

As a super excited local resident who is welcoming The Art of Melrose, and all that it represents, I appreciate learning from Duckworth that the business owners along Melrose are pumped and full of enthusiasm too! Tonight's 'Focus on Fashion' event will take place in the center section of the BID in the Gardner, Martel and Fuller blocks (the area that is home to a large concentration of high-end boutiques, trendy restaurants, and unique stores).

“Some business owners are going to have in-store models and fashion shows…there will be live music and restaurant specials. So there’s a lot of enthusiasm we’ve been met with and that’s very gratifying,” says Duckworth. “Once we get that enthusiasm going, it’s infectious and it will build upon itself. And we’re hoping to bring back the buzz of Melrose.”

To keep you in the know, here are some of the participating businesses and what they’re offering tonight, during this much-anticipated fashion event:

 • 310 Jeans: 50% off
 • B. Poy & Jo: Live music and complimentary cocktails

So You Received Great Customer Service...Now What? My 5 Tips Get You Started!

Bad customer service is my number one pet peeve. I can't stand when a sales associate doesn't greet me when I walk in the door, doesn't ask me if I need assistance, and simply forgets about me when I'm in the fitting room or waiting on a size. And every other poor behavior in between!

A Los Angeles fashion blogger who has worked in retail for 6 years (from the tail-end of high school throughout college), I know what goes into making customers satisfied and what can really piss a shopper off. That said, I know how easy it truly is to be a kind retail employee and treat everyone with the same level of service. It's really all about the "Golden Rule" - treat people how you would want to be treated.

Unfortunately, I often experience poor customer service for reasons I know exist, but I hate to accept (race? the way I'm dressed on a particular off day?). So when I do receive extraordinary help from an associate, I feel it's important to bring that person and his/her personality to light. What about you? While you may have tons of stories to tell your friends and loved ones regarding bad customer service...do you make an effort to spread the word about great customers service? If you've never taken an extra step to do so, I suggest that you take a few minutes to get that rollin'. Positive feedback can go a long way, and it honestly says a lot about your character as well! The term "giving back" can be interpreted in many ways, and I think giving praise to where praise is due is one significant aspect to this term.

Here are some ways you can give kudos to your favorite sales associate:

(1) Write a review on Yelp or Facebook. These days it's all about social media, right? Yup - pretty much. So turning to sites such as Yelp or Facebook to rate a certain store and write a review means the world to a company. Be sure to include the associate's name, store number, and the details regarding your visit!

(2) Promote the brand/store/associates on Social Media. Do not underestimate the power of word-of-mouth, and again, social media is a fabulous place to spread your positive experience with friends, family, and contacts! Facebook and Instagram provide great space for tons of interaction with your connections, which gives you a chance to answer specific questions that others may post. In addition, if you tag that particular brand/store, it could take notice and likely get involved with the convo and possibly even share on its corporate page. Also, if you tag that sales associate's social media page, he/she may also get involved and share or repost on his/her personal page!

(3) Ask to speak to the manager. The next time you can't stop smiling after making your purchase, simply because you treated with a lil' (or a lot of!) TLC, ask to speak directly to the manager. Communicating your experience first-hand regarding a particular associate will, in turn, make the manager smile. Your feedback will be appreciated, and you never know, your kindness may be the cherry on top for someone. Your new favorite helper may now get that raise!

(4) Email Corporate. Sometimes, you need to process the entire experience during you drive home before you reach out and share your experience with a company's corporate office. OR, you may have already utilized social media and spoke to a manager about an associate's professionalism....but still want to make that extra effort. Either way, you can typically find contact info to a store/brand's corporate office directly on its website if you wish to reach out and send a 'thank you' message.

(5) Remain a Loyal Customer (And Make Yourself a VIP!). Remember, if you really enjoyed your experience with an associate, it's likely that he/she did too! Day in and day out, these people have to deal with rude customers and challenging situations, so if they continue to see your friendly face on a regular basis, you can count on being treated with R-E-S-P-E-C-T.  Beware: His/her happiness may be contagious; don't be surprised if other associates step in to help you as well. Oh, and wanna be notified when upcoming sales or promotions are coming? Just be your sweet self, abide by The Golden Rule...and welcome the special VIP treatment with open arms!

Shopping for the Right Jeans: 3 Tips to Help Save Your Sanity!

For most women, shopping for the right jeans is a life challenge. Scratch that – a battle. You want a jean that’s comfy while still being sexy. A jean that’s versatile while perfectly suited for a night out on the town. You want a classic cut that is still trendy in style.

I know – waaaaay too many things to consider when thinking about finding a new pair of great jeans. While I have pairs that I love and some that I don’t so much (but still wear due to silly emotional attachments), it’s been a long time since I’ve walked into a mall with the goal of buying the perfect denim pant. Honestly, that means I would need to carve out a good chunk of my weekend to really be on the search. Ummm…not ready yet.

But, as I continue to tone my body (slimming this area, tightening up that part…), uncovering the right pair of jeans is at the top of my shopping list. There are many designers and brands out there to choose from, such as the awesome NYDJ, a line that is famous for helping women look and feel fabulous. (I’ve had a pair from this brand and can attest to its slimming jeans!). So to help you first get in tune with the concept of shopping for a new jean, while hopefully keeping you calm, collected, and actually excited about your next purchase, I’ve put together 3 tips that should help you before you immerse yourself in this gut-wrenching (ahem, challenging) journey. Consider these your starting points:

Be realistic about your overall budget. Whether you can afford a $200 pair of jeans or a $50 pair of jeans, the goal is to not break your bank while shopping. The reasons behind this are obvious (bills, bills, bills), but one of the things you may not have considered is the fact that you may want to score some new heels and a tee to go with your new find. So if your overall budget is $100, then it would be wise to budget everything else in as well. Caution: Once you look in the mirror and want to jump up and down because you found the pair of your dreams at a great cost, it’s likely you’re going to want to start styling an entire outfit around the jeans right away. You know, before actually leaving the store.

Consider your curves. These days, the question really isn’t “Do these jeans make my butt look fat?” Rather, it’s: “Do these jeans make my butt look big enough?” Women with curves often experience the difficulty in finding a jean that fits their rear and their smaller waist. Fortunately, the selection of jeans for women these days is getting better in being able to embrace a woman’s curves. So while the issues now aren’t so much having about limited options, it’s about patience really. Your best bet is to research where those jeans can be found, so you don’t waste time flipping through a rack of clothing that is designed for women without curves. Considering your curves is über-important, which will also prompt you to learn about which materials and percentage of stretch will do the trick. I also suggest exploring various colors and shades of jeans, as certain styles will either accentuate your lovely shape or make ‘em look sorta blah.

Think quality first. Yes, it is very likely that an expensive pair of jeans is of better quality than, say, a $20 pair of jeans. The craftsmanship, the brand reputation, and the material all play a role in the cost. While I do encourage you to leave a little extra room in your budget for another item to dress up your jeans…If you find that perfect pair that truly feels like it could take you all the way into a new decade – don’t skimp out. One great pair of jeans in a year is better than 5 cheap pairs that will soon split at the seams after just a couple of wears (or washes!).

While there are tons more tips to consider before shopping for the right jeans (i.e., versatility, the best length for jeans, the age appropriate factor), these are starting points…Happy Shopping!

Exclusive Interview with Kristi Yamaguchi - Olympic Champion and Creator of Activewear Clothing Line, Tsu.ya!

(Kristi Yamaguchi - the one and only!)

Did you know that Kristi Yamaguchi -- the Olympic Champion and American figure skater we've all adored over the years -- has a retail fashion collection? After recently learning about her line, Tsu.ya (pronounced sue-ya), I can think of a handful of awesome women who would benefit from this collection - including myself.

"Designed to Feel Good. Designed with a Purpose. Designed for Real Life.

A philanthropist, active mom, and fashion aficionado, the Olympic medalist was influenced by her many years of traveling as an international athlete. She understands the importance of comfort when it comes to fashion! And these days, after several years off the ice, Kristi knows that women on a mission (who probably couldn't even grasp the concept of "getting a day off") deserve amazing clothing to wear. Offering modern designs, on-trend colors and sophisticated styles, Tsu.ya looks to nicely combine the concepts of fashionable and functional, while giving back to a beautiful cause; a portion of the proceeds from this activewear line going to her Always Dream Foundation," which inspires underserved children to reach for their dreams through innovative reading programs and by advancing the cause of early childhood literacy."

For more insight from this all-star professional (including exclusive fashion tips!), check out our interview:

As an Olympic gold medalist, did you ever envision that you would take on the fashion industry with an exclusive retail collection?
K.Y.: I’ve always been interested in fashion and have always been open to one day doing something like this. I think years of being a part of my costume designing whet my appetite.
(Yup - you can totally be comfy AND cute in activewear clothing!)

I really appreciate the concept of Tsu.ya. How does your retail collection stand out among what’s currently available online and in stores?
K.Y.: We are proud to be a product with purpose. Tsu.ya was inspired to be able to give back so women can feel good both inside and out. Tsu.ya also takes great care in selecting quality fabrics that feel good. Our designs are on trend with a feminine touch with many pieces that can layer on the active ones for a more contemporary look. Silhouettes that flatter the female figure.
Tsu.ya has turned up the notch on casual, post-workout wear, adding a chic, feminine touch. What are some of your favorite Tsu.ya pieces you'd recommend to on-the-go, busy women for summertime?
K.Y: I love the Danya tank...either over a sports bra or a cami. The Rachel capris are a staple and have a great wide, supportive waistband. The Julia jacket has been popular and will also carry over to Fall in a new color.

(A portion of Tsu.ya's proceeds goes to Kristi's foundation - www.alwaysdream.org)

Which celebs could you immediately see wearing pieces of the Tsu.ya line?
K.Y.: I see Reese Whitherspoon, Lucy Lui, Jennifer Gardner, Pink, Kerry Washington, to name a few!
Who or what inspires you?
K.Y.: My daughters, philanthropy
What do you feel is the biggest challenge women have when it comes to shopping? Any tips to making the experience enjoyable?
K.Y.: Have an open mind. When I go out to find something specific, I never find it. When I just go to look, something usually catches my eye. Also, I like going in the evening, its much quieter then.
Three words to describe your own sense of style feminine, on-trend, comfortable

I Wanna Rock and Roll All Night (And Party Every Day) With Brize Collection...

Such a cool feeling when you interview a source and the two of you click. Like instantly. I never would have predicted that Tosha Brize, the humbled mastermind behind Brize Collection, would become more than an interview. That this woman, who is armed with such unwavering persistence, would quickly become a dear friend.

As the story goes, I reached out to Tosha on Twitter immediately after I noticed a conversation between her and Reality TV star/model/actress Tami Roman. Being the nosey tweetaholic that I am (and researcher, by nature), I began checking out the fashion item they were discussing. As I soon realized that Tosha Brize created custom-made Chuck's -- really cute, custom-made Chuck's - I knew that I needed to speak to her and feature her on Good Girl Gone Shopping. After all, unique, creative fashion will always be in style.

Agreeing to an interview (her first one!), Tosha not only gave me the rundown of the company, her goals, and her overall story, she also learned more about who I am. Finding time amongst our busy schedules, we eventually began chatting like old girlfriends, and not long thereafter, she began creating a custom-made shoe for...me!

Not only was I delighted to wear her art on my feet, it was a great time to explore a new, comfy flat! Typically, when I'm not wearing heels, I'm all about a pair of Old Navy flip flops...It was time to change that.

History behind the shoe:

In junior high and the earlier years of high school, my backpack and jeans were covered with patches of my fave early 90s, KROQ-esque bands (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Hole, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers...). I used to cut v-neck sweaters and then pin them together with safety pins. At 15 years old, I was most comfortable wearing my sister's 14-hole, worn-in Doc Martens with green laces (while sneaking a quick drag off a friend's cigarette in the parking lot at school). Basically, the time in my life when I really stood out as a Jewish biracial girl growing up in Pomona (receiving all sorts of criticism and confusion from different directions, which did not necessarily help a girl work thought an identity crisis), music was my go-to relief and sanity.

And today, music still plays a role in my well-being and image! I still rock out to the Chili Peppers while I drive, but I'll also ride along to the hits of Drake and the eclectic sounds of Santigold. With my newly locked hair and officially living among the beautiful and bizarre of Los Angeles, I find myself continuing to make my own statement as a fashion writer. Music definitely supports and inspires my own transformation.

So this pair of Chuck's was recreated by Tosha with my particular personality in mind. She says, "The shoes represent the historical Kiss group. When designing the shoe, I did research on the group - 1973 is the year the band was created. Their first big album to hit the billboard charts - which put the band on the map - was "Alive." As Tosha was explaining this to me, and adding that she thinks some great detail to the shoe should include safety pins as well as the word "Alive," I became waaaaay excited. I was all in! Although posters of the band Kiss didn't grace the walls of my bedroom while growing up, this American hard rock band has been one of the loudest statement-makers when it comes to their flamboyant style. I've always loved it, and trusted Tosha to use all of her creativity for my shoe. A one-of-a-kind shoe that uniquely plays on someone's love for rock music, my Chuck's are the most special piece in my closet right now (actually placed in a different room than my other shoes, as they deserve their own space). They were made for me.

Ordering your own pair of Chuck's:

The attentive and excellent business woman that she is, Tosha is very receptive to feedback and welcomes new orders.  I encourage you to follow Brize Collection on its social media platforms, so you can see the wide range of her custom-made Chuck's. You'll also notice that she is a jewelry designer!

Connect with her today on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Click HERE to read our full interview!
