Shop 'KIN LA' for Statement, Summer Fashion Trends!

(Asymmetrical Contoured Vest by Phillip Lim, $925)

(Cherry Top in Red Stripe by Again, $210)

(Cap Sleeve Blazer in Moss by Phillip Lim, $750)

(Alley Hat in Red by Brixton, $85)

Although I was unable to attend the recent VIP Media Event at KIN Los Angeles in West Hollywood (busy blogger over here!), I’m happy to share some of the statement, summer fashion trends this boutique is offering both in-store and online.

Whether you’re all about chillin’ in your PJs and shopping your heart out online or more of the “I want to browse around and try things on” kind of fashionista, KIN LA can help add some edge and creativity to your wardrobe. Stripes…asymmetrical shapes…heavy doses of black...bold accessories? I say rock ON.

Since 2004, KIN LA has been a highly coveted shopping destination on Sunset. Stocked with the latest collections from established designers around the globe, KIN LA is a multidimensional store that features both men’s and women’s clothing, as well as accessories from more than 20 international and domestic brands.

No, I have not shopped the store yet. But as I continue to downsize my existing wardrobe to make room for hotter, edgier trends – YES, stepping foot into KIN LA is on my to-do list. (I’m much more of the in-store shopper, as I love the extra inspiration I get when touching fabrics, trying on clothes, and gaining product knowledge from employees.)

Visit www.kinlosangeles.com to become familiar with this boutique! Be sure to also follow its Instagram page, where you’ll notice that some of Young Hollywood’s statement-making stars wearing designer pieces that are carried in KIN LA, such as Zoë Kravitz and Kylie Jenner. Happy Shopping!

'The Art of Melrose' Celebrates the Character of 'Fashion' Tonight, 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.!

For my 16th birthday, I didn’t want a “Sweet Sixteen” or to hang out with a bunch of friends. Nope. All I wanted was to go with my mom to Melrose and buy “something vintage.” And that’s what we did. The next day, I returned to school in the Inland Empire (Pomona High School) as the prideful outcast that I was, wearing my new treasured item: an argyle-printed, turquoise cardigan. And the rest is history...LA eventually became my home.

Now, an LA blogger who is still a total Melrose enthusiast and shopper, I’m proud to help announce something extremely cool and accessible: The Art of Melrose. Basically, it’s a celebratory, 3-series event that will take place the third Thursday of every month throughout June, July, and August. The Art of Melrose starts tonight, June 18th, from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

“The goal of the event is to showcase tremendous opportunities and value where consumers, and all of LA, will realize the magic that is Melrose,” says Don Duckworth, Executive Director of the Melrose Business Improvement District (BID), during our recent phone chat.

According to Duckworth, the BID is brand new – just a year old: “It’s a district that was formed by a vote of the property owners. The BID is a legal entity that was adopted just to promote business on the street.”

So how did the concept of The Art of Melrose come about?

“One of things that we have a desire – and an obligation – to do is to promote the full length of Melrose and all of the characters that are different from area to area.  And so we tried to figure out something that really identified the uniqueness and the fascinating array of activities and opportunities that are available on Melrose," says Duckworth. "So we came up with the idea of celebrating the art of Melrose in three unique characters; one being fashion, another being design, and another being expression. Each of those characters that stretch over a different number of blocks on Melrose, really add up to a story of what this street really is and the opportunities it has for people…whether you’re a shopper or a window shopper, or someone who is just looking to have a good meal and experience something good and fun in Los Angeles.”

As a super excited local resident who is welcoming The Art of Melrose, and all that it represents, I appreciate learning from Duckworth that the business owners along Melrose are pumped and full of enthusiasm too! Tonight's 'Focus on Fashion' event will take place in the center section of the BID in the Gardner, Martel and Fuller blocks (the area that is home to a large concentration of high-end boutiques, trendy restaurants, and unique stores).

“Some business owners are going to have in-store models and fashion shows…there will be live music and restaurant specials. So there’s a lot of enthusiasm we’ve been met with and that’s very gratifying,” says Duckworth. “Once we get that enthusiasm going, it’s infectious and it will build upon itself. And we’re hoping to bring back the buzz of Melrose.”

To keep you in the know, here are some of the participating businesses and what they’re offering tonight, during this much-anticipated fashion event:

 • 310 Jeans: 50% off
 • B. Poy & Jo: Live music and complimentary cocktails
 • Blackjack Clothing: 20% off
 • Bliss: 20% off
 • Cosmo & Nathalia Glamsquad: Live models, live music, dancing, 15% discount

Red Carpet Realness at 'The Voice Spring Break Concert" Event!

(Featuring The Voice's top 8 contestants of Season 8!)

Had a blast night hangin' out on the red carpet with my friend and blogger buddy, Leeann of Join the Gossip, for "The Voice Spring Break" concert! Amongst the competition that actually does exist among press and the blogging community, it was quite a joy to attend "The Voice Spring Break Concert" event with someone who also prides herself in being an ethical journalist first. (She and I are both CSUF alumnae with print journalism degrees!) But that's a whole other topic to write about...

(Me and Leeann red carpet-ing it up. We love black!)
So, in between Leeann and I gabbing about all that is entertainment and the randomness we obsess over, we got some face-to-face action with Season 8 contestants. They chatted about tons (with other reporters right next to us), including their love for music, the support they provide one another, their love for the judges, and how being on television has changed their lives.

Not only did I gain inspiration from the contestants, I truly enjoyed meeting Pharrell (he and Blake hit the red carpet with the contestants also!). Due to the slight chaos that typically develops behind the ropes, I didn't have a chance to ask my favorite fashionable male celeb a question. But kindly, he shook my hand and I was able to introduce myself. In fact, the did that with every reporter, which according to Leeann (who hits more red carpet events than I do), that's an extremely rare gesture from a celeb.

(Pharrell: Judge, Trendsetter, Music Mogul)
Speaking to a reporter from Hollywire, Pharrell provided genuine insight to the world of the contestants and what he believes their goals are as performers: "The love what they do...So, yeah, they wanna win, but I think they want to learn and advance more than anything else. And that's what's super-exciting for me...And I think that's what America's responding to..."

If you religiously watch The Voice, you definitely do NOT want to miss out this Monday, 8/7c! Word on the street is (and well, everywhere...that just sounded cool), is that former judges CeeLo, Usher, and Gwen are returning to the show to provide coaching support.

My only question about that is: What will Gwen be wearing??? (Can't wait.)

The 'Himalayan' Sneaker: An Iconic Collabo Between Camper and Bernhard Willhelm!

Four weeks ago, I welcomed a great, new sneaker to my shoe collection.

Wait - that's such an understatement. The real truth is this: Four weeks ago, my shoe game reached a new height of coolness, creativity, and comfort with the addition of an artistic "sneaker."

Thanks to being introduced to this Mediterranean brand by my boyfriend ("Babe, there is this line of cool sneaks I want us to both try!"), I couldn't imagine my wardrobe without my Camper Himalayan kicks now! And as a journalist by nature (and degree), I immediately knew that I had to get the ins about this awesome brand firsthand.

Turned out the original pair my boyfriend chose for me were a bit snug on my wide 'ol feet (and the line runs slightly small), so my visit to the Camper store at The Grove in LA was the perfect opportunity to chat with one of its team members. And to my delight, Dachelle Boehm (retail area manager for the west coast of the US and Canada) was there to give me the goods!

"Romain Kremer just became our creative director, and the styles are shifting and becoming more fashion-forward, which is really cool," said Boehm. "We're known for having comfortable, quality walking shoes. So everything is meant to be very comfortable and look very premium."

(Capturing the beauty of the "Himalayan" shoe...)
Not only did I also learn that Camper is a family-owned company based in Majorca, Spain and began making shoes 130 years ago (!!!), I learned that my particular shoe is a product of the creative collabo between Camper and innovative German designer Bernhard Willhelm.

Per Boehm, "The Bernhard Willhelm's have a huge cult following."

Nope - not surprised in the least. As you can see, the unusual features of this shoe are waaaay fashion-forward, epitomizing the designer's unique and edgy style. Willhelm's career in fashion is one that is internationally notable (launched his first women's collection during Paris Fashion Week in 1999, just after college, and designed his first menswear outfits in 2000).

Eventually, upon receiving accolades, becoming the creative director for Roberto Capucci fashion house (2002-2004), and opening his first boutique in Japan in 2006 (his women's line is licensed under the Japanese company, Bus Stop), Willhelm joined forces with Camper seven years ago, according to the designer's website. The "Bernhard Willhelm-Camper-Together" special lines of shoes began in 2008, providing both men and women interesting options in footwear.

(His and hers!)
I loooove that my Himalayan shoes turn heads anywhere I go. From the grocery store to the mall, it's now odd not to hear, "Hey girl, cool shoes!" Often pairing them with all black or a black-and-white ensemble, I let my Himalayans take center stage with each outfit.

While the cost of the Himalayan shoe costs sorta an arm and a leg for the common fashion lover, the details are worth the purchase ($275 regular price).

Awesome features of this shoe: padded tongue, thick laces that wrap around the entire shoe, anatomic insole that gives extra comfort on the heel (and a little bounce!), rubber layer for a good grip, and striking contrasts of color.

If you're in the LA area, I suggest stopping by The Grove to inhale the artistry of the "Together with Camper" line. I also just noticed that Willhelm is currently presenting a solo exhibition at MOCO Pacific Design Center in LA, which will last through May 17, 2015 ("When Fashion Shows the Danger Then Fashion is the Danger"). That's definitely on my radar and making its way to my calendar as we speak.

So what else can I say about my favorite new shoe? Just that I'm officially one "Happy Camper."

Shopping Cheap (With Chump Change): Don't Knock It Til You Try It!

(Walked in a store next to Trader Joe's last week and walked out with these $1.50 boho chic danglies.)

(A total score at Marshall's - a BCBGeneration "Blessed" band spotted for less than $10 while in line. Was a must-have.)

(The flea market off Melrose and Fairfax is the perfect hunting ground. This $7 turquoise, double-strand necklace is my new fave item.)

If you've never paid for a pair of costume earrings, a bracelet, or a necklace with just a handful of change, I gotta be honest with you: you're not truly living. I mean, you may believe that you're the hottest fashionista to strut your stuff since the 80s catwalk days of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell...and OK, maybe you are...BUT...what about being a hot style maven who knows how to stretch her dollar while appearing effortlessly gorge?

While luxury accessories will always be sought after by the ultra-chic fashionista, there is something exciting and purely awesome in buying a new, fun item to adorn your outfit with using the change in your purse pocket. (Maybe from that $5 you forgot was left over from your breakfast combo from Starbucks...or possibly from those bucks that used to go toward a pack of Marlboro menthols...)

Ultimately, there is just something really cool and smart in buying cheap costume accessories. Whether you are on a mission ("OK, I have $20! I'm gonna find some great items today!") or you calmly stash your fashion change on an as-needed basis ("There's nothing I really need right now, but I might check out that shop I walk past every day. Let's see what they have in stock..."), keep your options open! Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that quality outweighs quantity, and that investing in brands and designers is an important part of maintaining a fabulous image. (I love my Tiffany jewelry and Betsey Johnson dangly earrings.) But I also believe that if you leave misconceptions, judgment, and nervousness at the door, you are opening yourself up to workable items that you may never have considered before.

Living in Los Angeles, I often walk the historical flea market off Melrose and Fairfax on Sundays, typically walking away with an extra pep in my step because of my new necklaces and hair clips. I also come to a screeching halt when I see local lawns full of yard sale junk treasures. Yup - the Goodwill is also a fun stomping ground for affordable and vintage-y pieces.

Remember: It's all about how you style what you've got. As a fashion writer, I take pride in being able to sit at top designer fashion shows in both LA and New York (inhaling the fabulous scent of couture), while equally proud that I don't give an eff if I'm wearing earrings that cost $1.50 or $100. In fact, I brag more about the former investment.

Do you proudly shop cheap? What was the best item you ever purchased?

LA Fashion Stylist 'RiRi' Shows the Beauty in Versatility!

(Fashion sets by RiRi/ skirt from Rihanna's collection for River Island)

One of the biggest challenges many women are faced with is: How to wear the same thing more than once...differently. Every fashion piece carries versatility, but too many times, people disillusion themselves into thinking things like, "But I just wore that! Everybody will be able to tell if I wear it again." Not the case if you put on your creative cap and think versatility, as this really is key to fashion and exploring one's personal style.

So I asked RiRi (Sheri Thomas), an LA-based fashion stylist to put together three looks worked around the same item. She chose this fabulously feminine skirt from Rihanna's collection for River Island. (The middle look totally speaks to me, because I enjoy the contrast of black with a soft color.) I also asked her a few questions about her work, because I'm naturally intrigued with the mind of a stylist. Enjoy!

So tell me about your beginnings...How did you get into styling?

Well now, let's see... I've actually always, since I can remember, LOVED clothes, watching fashion week and fashion shows on TV, buying magazines and just trying to emulate the styles that caught my attention with a little twist on it of course, because my pockets were never as fat as my taste lol. So as a kid I'd change clothes about 5 times before I went to school, and when things got too little for me like pants or shirts I'd cut them up and make shorts or midriffs or what have you. I then realized I loved clothes. By trade I am a hair stylist. I grew up in the salon environment because my mother was and still is in the beauty industry, so hair/fashion/beauty/makeup all mesh together, which ultimately is my life.

What drives you as a fashion stylist?

As a fashion stylist, being able to be creative and inspire everyday people with a classic, versatile outlook on fashion is what drives me. It makes me happy to see people feel good about themselves.

What inspires you on a daily basis?

On a daily basis I am a mother first. So my kids inspire me to always strive for greatness. Also the littlest things can spark inspiration for me...colors, patterns and nature.

As a stylist who works with both men and women, are there certain set of challenges with each?

Hmmm... People in general always give you certain challenges. Some more than others, not particularly male or female. Its more of a comfort zone thing with people or egos and people who want to do my job that I find most challenging...lol. But I understand ultimately the person being styled has to feel most confident and comfortable because after all they are wearing the clothes. So it's definitely a compromise and a give and take relationship between the stylist and client.

(LA-based fashion stylist, RiRi!)

How would you describe an ideal client?

An ideal client for me has an open mind or is a blank canvas, is versatile and definitely comfortable with my eye. Also an ideal client will have an eye for style, which in collaboration with each other, we can create a harmonious outcome.

Tell me about the process of working with a client; if I were to go to you and say “Help!” How would we proceed?

Basically, we'd have a consultation where we'd discuss you and your needs. Once that is established, depending on what your necessity is, we'd go from there. I offer closet makeovers, personal shopping, personal styling, look books, and daily, weekly, monthly consults.

Which stores can you always depend on to uncover great finds for clients?

I love vintage, thrift, and small boutique stores for great one-of-a-kind pieces.

How would you describe your own style?

My style is effortless, classic and versatile. It's like depending on how my hair is, my clothes have to coordinate, and vice versa.

What are your thoughts about the fashion industry as a whole?

The fashion industry as a whole is amazing. Very artsy and creative human beings.

What are the 3 essentials all women need in their closet? And what about for men?

For both men and women, the 3 staple items that you must own are a pair of black pants, a white button up blouse/shirt and a brown belt!

To keep up with RiRi's fun fashion sets, be sure to follow her on Instagram! To directly reach the lovely LA fashion stylist regarding consultations, please email LoveRiRiStyle@gmail.com.

MUST-READ Interview: FIDM-Graduate Riley Suchánek Prepares for Her First 'AD HOC' LA Fashion Show!

(Fashion designer and founder of AD HOC, Riley Suchánek)

A college graduate feeling hopeless after getting her degree because she has to find a “real” job? Totally normal. A college graduate who decided to take matters into her own hands (turning that frown upside down) and create a fashion show production company? Straight-out gutsy and admirable.

Meet Riley Suchánek, the soft-spoken and strikingly introverted designer who is putting her degree from The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) to good use. With an innate understanding of the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into fashion, Riley developed AD HOC with a specific goal in mind: To produce a fashion show that is anything but typical. AD HOC offers individual designers the chance to showcase his/her entire collection at one time versus a few select pieces here and there. The designers of AD HOC "pride themselves on their fresh intake and ambition and strive to get their feet in the overpopulated and highly selective door of the fashion industry."

With a handpicked team of support, Riley is currently in the process of finishing up the planning of her first AD HOC fashion show, set to take place on February 27, 2014.  Having gone to several fashion shows for nearly a decade, I have always been amazed with the entire production of such an event. From the collections and the models to the music and the chosen venue – this is no easy feat.

(Riley en vogue)

So I encourage you to check out my exclusive interview with Riley, soak up her passion, and purchase your affordable ticket today! Yup -- I'll be there.

So you went to FIDM! What was your area of concentration?

Yes! I did go to The Fashion Institute to study apparel design. It is a two-year program for an associates degree. I learned the process of designing, from illustration through production.

What about fashion interests you the most?

I like fashion because there are pieces that you personally relate to. Not everyone likes the same outfit in one collection. The audience will be attracted to different things, but this one designer (or group of designers) projected their idea in a clear way that others can wear and carry with them. It's been said before, but fashion is an expression of yourself in a tangible way. That is interesting to me.

Growing up...Did you always see yourself getting in the fashion industry?

I decided I wanted to make clothes when I was around the age of 10. I was always into drawing and sewing, bringing something to life. I am a particular person, so I like the control of picking out a certain hue of a color, pattern of fabric, length of a hem, or even the men’s shoe that should be worn with a woman’s outfit. This makes every designer’s aesthetic, but I know mine very well. So it seemed fitting to follow what has been natural to me all along.

(The AD HOC team putting in work.)

 Tell me about AD HOC!

Well, AD HOC is a fashion show I decided to put on after struggling to find a job after graduating. Every job listing required 3-5 years of experience. School never seemed to fit the “experience” requirement, so I looked to see if I could show my ideas somewhere were others were in the same boat as me. Again, I am particular and couldn’t find anything that matched what I had pictured in my mind for that kind of event and environment.

I decided to make this “thing” I was looking for, myself. I asked friends from school and different media outlets if they would be interested in participating, and chose four other designers. I built an Indiegogo campaign to help with booking a venue and started an Instagram page for the show to get people other than family and friends to attend the show.

How involved are you with the entire planning of the show?

I am showing a mini-collection at the show as well as producing the show. This is the first fashion show I’ve been a part of other than this one Chloé show I was a dresser for. Being a volunteer dresser isn’t really a lot of experience to me, although it is on my resume! Ha! That’s just the thing about resumes, you can make yourself look really good, but from the hiring company’s point of view, you can’t really see the hard work behind the one-line description of your previous positions.

I've been to several fashion shows over the last decade, and I know that there are tons of factors that contribute to it being a success! What do you believe makes a fashion show a success?

You could probably teach me a few things then! I’m always learning new things through producing this show. There are a lot of little details that sometimes are challenging for an introvert like myself. What makes a fashion show success, to me, is hard work and supporters. If it weren’t for those who believed in me enough to donate to the show, I wouldn’t have a show. You also have to give back. In building this for myself and my portfolio, I wanted to help others show their work. They can then put this one their resume and hopefully get a better step into the door they’re after.

What do you hope to contribute to the fashion industry?

I want to contribute an intimate feeling of comfort and easiness to looking androgynous. I’m not drawn to commercial brands. I don’t hate them, I am just more drawn to things that look like they took a lot of time and thought to make. That is probably why I didn’t land a job after graduation in the industry -- I am picky in where I spend my time working for someone else. That has been a blessing and a burden.

It's been 10 years since I've been out of college...And I still miss a good lecture! Do you miss anything about being a student at FIDM?

Yes! As much as I complained about homework and going to class sometimes, I do love school. I liked my program because it exposed me to things I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. Art History, for example, became my favorite subject. I always liked art museums and had favorite pieces, but I would never even think to take an Art History class outside of my course.

(Riley captured in thought...)

I also miss having more experienced people around me. I had a few really good professors, one of which I still keep in contact with, that really boosted my belief in my ideas. It’s very easy to second-guess yourself, but now I am clear on what I am capable of doing.

How would you describe your own personal style?

Androgynous with a baby-doll feel. Not the pink-girly-Barbie kind of doll, more like simple-silhouette-paper doll.

Who or what inspires you?

Honestly, everything inspires me. I really do believe everything happens for a reason, and with everything that happens to you, you learn something new about yourself. But, more specifically, designers like Rodarte, Acne, and Dries Van Noten further solidify that I should stand behind my work more. They are each very reassuring to me. I hope to be that to someone else in the future.
